[that gets a faint laugh...real, but short. She's more preoccupied than usual - a reliable enough sign that something's on her mind]

[her hands, never really still, picked at a bit of dried paint on the cuff of her sleeve]

There was a message in the journals today. About someone starting a beauty salon.

[really, Jilly...as far as lead-ins go, that certainly didn't seem to fit the concern]

[His face scrunches in mildly amused confusion. What a weird thing to say Jilly! But he knows where this is going, so it's best to act as normal as possible.]

Oh yeah, that red-headed lady! She's very nice, offered to give me a haircut!

[keeping secrets. Not telling about Grell's true nature was supposed to be their safety net....but she hated the idea of someone getting hurt for her silence.]

James, it might be better to find someone else to cut it.

[really shouldn't be saying this, but hedging wouldn't help anyone and would probably be seen as just as much of a violation]

She attacked a friend of mine. Badly.

[she shook her head] She hasn't done anything like that since, as far as I know. But I'd still feel better if you were...careful.

Oh God are they okay?

He's fine. It's been a long time. Months, now.

Sooo what did she do?

[It's a question out of curiosity.]

[in for a penny, in for a pound, but she doesn't look happy. And she's slow to actually speak again, though she eventually does]

[Jilly wasn't a squeamish person, but it's still quiet, and she can't help paling slightly at the memory. There'd been so much blood.]

Jesus. I'm so sorry.

[His voice is hushed and his eyes are wide with concern and possibly what could be classified as fear.

He's working on keeping himself from squirming with delight, but it could be interpreted as disgust. Maybe he won't need to keep himself still.]

So she does this a lot then?

[He squeaks it.]

[she should have talked to Buffy. Archie. Already this feels like a bad idea. But now that the damage was done...

He'd gone through enough. And if he stayed away from Grell, it would be alright.

Quietly] We made a deal. We wouldn't spread who was responsible, and she wouldn't hurt him again. [or Jack or Buffy or Horatio or her...]

I'm not saying she'd hurt you. I don't know. Maybe she wouldn't. But...you should be careful.

[He manages to make it sound light, but the tremor of worry is still present in his voice and his hands and neck are twitching in an odd sort of fashion that could call to mind a nervous bird.]
